HOW GOD TESTS YOUR FAITH

“Whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your FAITH IS TESTED, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when it is fully developed you will be STRONG IN CHARACTER and ready for anything!”James 1:2-4 (NLT)

6 WAYS GOD TESTS YOUR FAITH TO BUILD YOUR CHARACTER

1ST TEST:

A NEW TASK.
(WHAT Lord?)

“It was by faith that Noah built an ark to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about something that had never happened before.” Hebrews 11:7 (NLT)

o FAITH IS

FACING THE FUTURE
without knowing “WHAT?”

“Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain OF WHAT we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)

2ND TEST:

A MAJOR CHANGE
(WHERE Lord?)

“It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went WITHOUT KNOWING WHERE HE WAS GOING.”Hebrews 11:8-10 (NLT)

o FAITH IS

FOLLOWING GOD'S LEADING
without knowing “WHERE?”

3RD TEST:

A DELAYED PROMISE
(WHEN Lord?)

“Even after Abraham reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith—for he was like a foreigner, LIVING IN A TENT AND SO DID ISAAC AND JACOB, to whom God gave the SAME PROMISE. Abraham did this because he was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God.”Hebrews 11:8-10 (NLT)

o FAITH IS

WAITING FOR GOD'S TIMING
without knowing “WHEN?”

4TH TEST:

A UNSOLVABLE PROBLEM
(HOW Lord?)

“It was by faith that Sarah together with Abraham was ABLE TO HAVE A CHILD, even though they were too old and Sarah was barren. Abraham believed that God would keep his promise. And so a whole nation came from this one man, Abraham, who was too old to have any children—a nation with so many people that, like the stars of the sky and the sand on the seashore, there is no way to count them.”Hebrews 11:11-12 (NLT)

o FAITH IS

EXPECTING A MIRACLE
without knowing “HOW?”

5TH TEST:

A SENSELESS LOSS
(WHY Lord?)

“It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had received God's promises, was READY TO SACRIFICE his only son, Isaac, even though God had promised him, ‘Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.”Hebrews 11:17-18 (NLT)

“Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death!” Hebrews 11:19 (NIV)

o FAITH IS

TRUSTING GOD'S PURPOSE
without knowing “WHY?”

6TH TEST:

A PROLONGED PAIN
(HOW LONG Lord?)

“By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. HE CHOSE TO BE MISTREATED along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.”Hebrews 11:24-26 (NIV)

o FAITH IS

CONTINUING TO PERSIST
without knowing “HOW LONG?”

“By faith Moses left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; He PERSEVERED because he saw him who is invisible.” Hebrews 11:27 (NIV)

An Opportunity- God gives you a promise

An Obstacle or Opponent –that holds you back

An Ordeal - A waiting period or test

LEARNING TO SEE

“For from the very beginning God decided that those who came to him – and all along he knew who would – should become like his Son . . .”

Romans 8:29a (TLB)

“For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom . . . And the Lord – who is the Spirit – makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.”2 Corinthians 3:17, 18 (NLT)

“But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”Galatians 5:22a (TLB)

When I am in control of my personality, I will leave damage in my wake. When God is in control of my personality I will leave blessing in my wake.

1. WE ARE
BLIND.

DEFINITION: PLACES WE LACK CLARITY, INSIGHT AND AWARENESS OF OURSELVES AND OUR PATTERNS OF REACTING AND RELATING IN LIFE.

OVER TIME, IF WE KEEP

CHOOSING

NOT TO SEE, WE WILL

BE ABLE TO SEE.

2. WHY DO WE CHOOSE

BLINDNESS OVER SIGHT.

•
PAIN

•
PRIDE

•
FEAR

•
LAZINESS

•
STUBBORNNESS

•
TRAUMA

“How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”Psalm 19:12-14 (NLT)

“Don’t criticize, and then you won’t be criticized. For others will treat you as you treat them. And why worry about a speck in the eye of a brother when you have a board in your own? Should you say, ‘Friend, let me help you get that speck out of your eye,’ when you can’t even see because of the board in your own? Hypocrite! First get rid of the board. Then you can see to help your brother.”Matthew 7:1-5 (NLT)

3. RESPONSES TO A BLINDSPOT

• Reject it – it’s not true

• Acknowledge it and

stop the bad behavior.

• Acknowledge it and

let God root it out.

4. HOW CAN WE LEARN TO ACCURATELY SEE OURSELVES?

• Accept that I am God’s

Beloved.

“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 (NLT)

• Look at an accurate

mirror.

“But if anyone keeps looking steadily into God’s law for free men, he will not only remember it but he will do what it says . . . James 1:25a (TLB)

• Examine my relationships for

patterns of behavior.

• What am I pretending not to know?

• What am I pretending is not a problem?

• What am I pretending I’ve overcome?

• What do I think I’m good at but others tell me I’m not?

• What is it like on the other side of me?

• Establish a daily

practice of humility
before God

“Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt . . . Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean . . .”Psalm 51:1,2,7 (NLT)

BREAKING THE DESTRUCTIVE PATTERNS IN YOUR LIFE

The seven areas of the Wheel of Life

1.
Spiritual

2.
Mental

3.
Family

4.
Career

5.
Personal

6.
Financial

7.
Physical

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him.Matthew 4:18-19 (NIV)

1.
Break free

from your
default setting.

Don’t revert to

your old ways of thinking

when
times are tough.

The key to change is having a big enough reason to change. People change when their status quo becomes unacceptable or when the pain of staying the same becomes unbearable.

2. Discover your
why

There are books on
how to

but knowing your
why

for change is essential.

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” Romans 12:2 (NIV)

3. Change the

tape in your head

and stop

listening to your critics.

The greatest transformations take place when people can visualize the breakthrough before it happens.

4.
visualize reaching
your new life and breakthrough.

Examples of people who visualize reaching their breakthrough:
  • The Woman with the Issue of Blood (Matt 9:20-22)

  • Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52)

  • The Two Blind Men (Matt 9:27-31)

  • The Woman with a Sick Daughter (Matt 15:22)

  • Athletes prior to a game

  • Inventors

  • Writers

  • Teachers

  • Lawyers

Some of greatest breakthroughs come through A PROCESS!

The Space between our Prayers and Praise

What do we do while we wait for our prayers to be answered?   In Daniel 10:11-13,  Daniel's prayer was answered the first day he prayed...
